Today’s cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors, but the car of the
future will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of automobile engines have
already been developed than run on alternative sources of power, such as electricity, compressed natural gas,
methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however, is the only zero-emission option presently
available.
Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other dependable
source of current is available, transport experts foresee a new assortment of electric vehicles entering everyday
life: shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood cars, electric delivery vans, bikes and
trolleys.
As automakers work to develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are focusing
on infrastructure systems to support and make the best use of the new cars. Public charging facilities will need to
be as common as today’s gas stations. Public parking spots on the street or in commercial lots will need to be
equipped with devices that allow drivers to charge their batteries while they stop, dine, or attend a concert. To
ðê 001 Trang 3
encourage the use of electric vehicles, the most convenient parking in transportation centers might be reserved
for electric cars.
Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses and neighborhood vehicles all meeting at transit
centers that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a variety of electric
cars to suit their needs: light trucks, one-person three-wheelers, small cars, or electric/gasoline hybrid cars for
longer trips, which will no doubt take place on automated freeways capable of handling five times the number of
vehicles that can be carried by freeway today.
Câu 41: The following electrical vehicles are all mentioned in the passage EXCEPT
A. vans B. trains C. planes D. trolleys

A pilot cannot fly by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense fog, a pilot
must use radar, an alternative way of navigating. Since human eyes are not very good at determining speeds of
approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving. The basic principle of radar is
exemplified by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echo of the sounds against the walls helps a
person determine the size of the cave. With radar, however, the waves are radio waves instead of sound waves.
Radio waves travel at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers in one second. A radar set sends out a short
burst of radio waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when the waves bounce off objects. By determining
the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set, a trained technician can determine the distance between
the radar set and other objects. The word “radar”, in fact, gets its name from the term “radio detection and
ranging”. “Ranging” is the term for detection of the distance between an object and the radar set. Besides being
of critical importance to pilots, radar is essential for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea, and for tracking
weather systems and storms.
Câu 51: What is the main topic of this passage?
A. The nature of radar. B. History of radar. C. Alternatives to radar. D. Types of ranging.
Câu 52: According to the passage, what can radar detect besides location of objects?

Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living things, the crucial problem of desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing water are rare. And since man’s inexorable necessity is to absorb large quantities of water at frequent intervals, he can scarely comprehend that many creatures of the desert pass their entire lives without a single drop.
Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not aliminated life but only those forms unable to withstand its desiccating effects. No moistskinned, water-loving animals can exist there. Few large animals are found. The giants of the North American desert are the deer, the coyote, and the bobcat. Since desert country is open, it holds more swift-footed running and leaping creatures than the tangled forest. Its population is largely nocturnal, silent, filled with reticence, and ruled by stealth. Yet they are not emaciated.
Having adapted to their austere environment, they are as healthy as animals anywhere else in the word. The secret of their adjustment lies in the combination of behavior and physiology. None could survive if, like mad dogs and Englishmen, they went out in the midday sun; many would die in a matter of minutes. So most of them pass the burning hours asleep in cool, humid burrows underneath the ground, emerging to hunt only by night. The surface of the sun-baked desert averages around 150 degrees, but 18 inches down the temperature is only 60 degrees.

Psychologists have debated a long time about whether a child’s upbringing can give it the ability to do outstandingly well. Some think that it is impossible to develop genius and say that it is simply something a person is born with. Others, however, argue that the potential for great achievement can be developed. The truth lies somewhere between these two extremes.
It seems very obvious that being born with the right qualities from gifted parents will increase a child’s ability to do well. However, this ability will be fully realized only with the right upbringing and opportunities. As one psychologist says, “To have a fast car, you need both a good engine and fuel.”
Scientists have recently assessed intelligence, achievement, and ability in 50 sets of identical twins that were separated shortly after birth and brought up by different parents. They found that achievement was based on intelligence, and later influenced by the child’s environment.
One case involving very intelligent twins was quoted. One of the twins received a normal upbringing, and performed well. The other twin, however, was brought up by extremely supportive parents and given every possible opportunity to develop its abilities. That twin, though starting out with the same degree of intelligence as the other, performed even better.
This case reflects the general principle of intelligence and ability. The more favorable the environment, the more a child’s intelligence and ability are developed. However, there is no link between intelligence and the socioeconomic level of a child’s family. In other words, it does not matter how poor or how rich a family is, as this does not affect intelligence.
Gifted people cannot be created by supportive parents, but they can be developed by them. One professor of music said that outstanding musicians usually started two or three years earlier than ordinary performers, often because their parents had recognized their ability. These musicians then needed at least ten years’ hard work and training in order to reach the level they were capable of attaining.
People who want to have very gifted children are given the following advice:
- Marry an intelligent person.
- Allow children to follow their own interests rather than the interests of the parents.
- Start a child’s education early but avoid pushing the child too hard.
- Encourage children to play; for example, playing with musical instruments is essential for a child who wants to become an outstanding musician.

Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not an liminated life but only those forms unable to withstand  its desiccating effects.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 56 to 65.

A. vans B. trains C. planes D. trolleys
Câu 42: The author’s purpose in the passage is to
A. criticize conventional vehicles
B. support the invention of electric cars
C. narrate a story about alternative energy vehicles
D. describe the possibilities for transportation in the future
Câu 43: The passage would most likely be followed by details about
A. automated freeways B. pollution restrictions in the future
C. the neighborhood of the future D. electric shuttle buses
Câu 44: The word “compact” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to
A. long-range B. inexpensive C. concentrated D. squared (Compact disk = đĩa mềm.

Câu 28: _____ of the shop, my friend come in.
    A. Coming out        B. On coming out     C. When coming out      D. As I came out

=> Khác chủ từ nên loại A và C. Thầy Cucku nói: on coming out là dạng rút gọn của when coming out -> B sai luôn. Câu đề viết sai chữ come phải không bạn?

Câu 41: A. in      B. for     C. with  D. to

(… which both spouses have paying jobs  for work … )

=> Tui nghĩ là for. Tui viết lại câu, đem in ở phía trước which dời đi chỗ khác.

Câu 49: Question 49: The pharse “those forms” in the passage refers to all of the following EXCEPT _____.
    A. water-loving animals        B. the coyote and the bobcat
    C. moist-skinned animals    D. many large animals

=> The  giants  of  the  North  American  desert  are  the  deer,  the coyote, and the bobcat.

Câu 67: She had to leave because she didn’t see eyes to eyes with her boss.

Vậy mình sửa eyes to eyes thành gì vậy? faces to faces =  đối mặt hả bạn?

Câu 68: Do you know that there is a high rate in interest on this loan?

=> Sửa in thành gì?

Câu 74: Recent evidence makes it possible for the investigators to conclude that _____  .
    A. some paintings by Rembrandt were faked
    B. some paintings by Rembrandt must be faked
    C. Rembrandt was attituded to some paintings
    D. some paintings by Rembrandt to be faked

Vì vậy đáp án là A mới đúng ?!?!?!

Câu 75: In bacteria and other organisms, _____.
    A. it is the DNA that provides the genetic information
    B. which is the DNA that provides the genes
    C. the DNA providing the genetic information
    D. the DNA that provides the genetic information

Chọn A đúng rồi ^-^ !

Đề sai đó chị, đáng lẽ phải là:  _____ of the shop, my friend came in.

    Câu 41: A. in      B. for     C. with  D. to

(… which both spouses have paying jobs  for work … )

=> Tui nghĩ là for. Tui viết lại câu, đem in ở phía trước which dời đi chỗ khác.

Today, men expect to (40) work  for pay for about 40 years of their lives, and, in today’s marriages (41) _____ which both spouses have paying jobs, women can expect to work for about 30 to 35 years of their lives.

    Question 41:     A. in      B. for     C. with  D. to
in which = in marriages (which thay thế cho tiền trí từ marriages)

Today, men expect to work  for pay for about 40 years of their lives, and, in today’s marriages where = in which both spouses have paying jobs, women can expect to work for about 30 to 35 years of their lives.

Dời in: ... and, in today’s marriages which both spouses have paying jobs in, women can expect to work for about 30 to 35 years of their lives.

Câu 74: Recent evidence makes it possible for the investigators to conclude that _____  .
        A. some paintings by Rembrandt were faked
        B. some paintings by Rembrandt must be faked
        C. Rembrandt was attituded to some paintings
        D. some paintings by Rembrandt to be faked

facts or signs that show clearly that something exists or is true (sự thực hay dấu hiệu cho thấy rành rành rằng cái gì đó tồn tại hoặc đúng với thực tế).
Câu B dùng must + Vo (ở đây là thụ động must + be + V3/ed) : suy đoán ở hiện tại.
câu B dùng must have been faked thì cũng không đúng. Vì cấu trúc này diễn tả 1 suy luận hợp lý trong quá khứ (speculation about the past).

Câu 75: In bacteria and other organisms, _____.
        A. it is the DNA that provides the genetic information
        B. which is the DNA that provides the genes
        C. the DNA providing the genetic information
        D. the DNA that provides the genetic information

Chị xem lại câu baovan hỏi đi ạ! Bảo vân đưa ra câu C. Rồi em và chị mới nói là, câu đó muốn đúng phải viết là:
In bacteria and other organisms, the DNA provides the genetic information.
Câu B: mở đầu bằng which ... => mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề phụ thuộc, chưa có mệnh đề chính. Loại.
Câu C: the DNA providing the genetic information.
(Chưa có mệnh đề chính). Loại luôn!
present participle (rút gọn của mệnh đề quan hệ)
    Câu D: the DNA
that provides the genetic information. (Chưa có mệnh đề chính). Loại nốt!
mệnh đề quan hệ mở đầu bằng đại từ quan hệ that
    Câu A:
it is the DNA that provides the genetic information.
Cấu trúc Câu chẻ (Cleft Sentence):
       It is + Noun/Pronoun + that + V ... (Chủ từ của VNoun/Pronoun sau It is)
Chúng ta cũng chú ý luôn, cụm
In bacteria and other organisms là cụm giới từ chỉ nơi chốn, không liên quan đến cấu trúc của một câu độc lập!

    Bình thường thôi...

    Câu 41: A. in      B. for     C. with  D. to

Today, men expect to work  for pay for about 40 years of their lives, and, in today’s marriages where = in which both spouses have paying jobs, women can expect to work for about 30 to 35 years of their lives.

=> Hiểu rồi em! Cám ơn nha!

Câu 74: Recent evidence makes it possible for the investigators to conclude that _____  .
        A. some paintings by Rembrandt were faked
        B. some paintings by Rembrandt must be faked
        C. Rembrandt was attituded to some paintings
        D. some paintings by Rembrandt to be faked

Câu 75: In bacteria and other organisms, _____.
        A. it is the DNA that provides the genetic information
        B. which is the DNA that provides the genes
        C. the DNA providing the genetic information
        D. the DNA that provides the genetic information

Chị xem lại câu baovan hỏi đi ạ!

=> ^-^ Câu này chị không nói đề sai. Chị nói là chị chọn sai vì hồi trước nhớ Bảo Vân có đăng câu này nên chị chỉ nhìn 2 câu C và D và nghĩ là đề sai. Nhìn đáp án thì thấy câu A đúng rồi. Có cấu trúc nhấn mạnh: It’s … that -> Chính DNA cung cấp

        C. moist-skinned animals    D. many large animals
